Florida Birds Exposed, Introducing Florida Birds by Dr. Juanita N. Baker shows our local birds and habitats through the ‘Florida Bird Photo of the Month’ photos. There are 87 full-page photos and an additional 200 other remarkable photographs by 53 photographers. Many photographers rose to the challenge of photographing birds, learning to respect and understand the birds. Being a psychologist, Dr. Baker sought interesting behaviors and details on each bird based on Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Birds of North America science articles online, to bring each bird alive for the reader.
Designed so that birders who do not know anything about Florida Birds can immediately get an understanding, background and familiarity with the birds that are common here, the book briefly reviews Florida’s bird families and their specialized characteristics to help one identify any bird seen. New bird watchers will appreciate and be moved to get outdoors and see the birds. Kids will readily identify what birds, they have found. Everyone will know that Florida is a birding paradise.
For experienced birders, the Introduction is crucial to understanding Florida’s habitat and wildlife—a primer as to why Florida has so many unusual birds. The art of photography, what environmental factors birds face, where and when the birds will be in Florida and some of the issues facing birds today are simply discussed. This book is a snapshot of what the environmental issues are impacting Florida and our birds. Ideas are included about what we can do to work together towards solutions to preserve these Florida treasures.
